Some water damage is impossible to miss, like a burst pipe spraying across the kitchen. But many leaks are slow and quiet. A dripping supply line inside a wall or a small roof leak above the ceiling can go unnoticed for weeks or months while it soaks into wood, drywall and insulation.
The sooner you spot the signs, the easier and less expensive the fix. Here are seven warning signs to watch for in your home.
1. A Musty or Earthy Smell
A persistent musty odor is often the first clue. It usually means moisture is trapped somewhere and mold or mildew may be starting to grow, even if you cannot see it.
2. Stains on Ceilings or Walls
Yellow, brown or ring-shaped stains are a classic sign of water above or behind the surface. Stains that grow over time mean the leak is still active. Our ceiling water damage repair service traces the source before fixing the ceiling.
3. Bubbling, Peeling or Cracking Paint
When moisture gets behind paint or wallpaper, it loses its grip on the wall. Bubbles, blisters and peeling are often a sign of water inside the wall cavity.
4. Warped, Soft or Cupped Floors
Hardwood that cups or crowns, laminate that swells at the seams and vinyl that lifts can all point to moisture underneath. Soft spots in the subfloor are a more serious warning.
5. Swollen Drywall or Baseboards
Drywall acts like a sponge. If it feels soft, looks swollen or crumbles when pressed, it has likely been wet for a while. Baseboards that pull away from the wall are another clue. Damaged sections can usually be replaced with water damaged drywall repair once the area is dry.
6. A Water Bill That Suddenly Jumps
If your usage has not changed but your water bill has climbed, you may have a leak. Try this simple test:
- Turn off every faucet and water-using appliance in the house.
- Write down the reading on your water meter.
- Wait one to two hours without using any water.
- Check the meter again. If the reading has changed, water is leaking somewhere.
7. Visible Mold Spots
Small black, green or gray spots around windows, under sinks, in closets or along baseboards usually mean moisture has been present long enough for mold to grow. Avoid scrubbing it dry, which can release spores into the air.
What to Do If You Notice These Signs
- Look for an obvious source, like a leaking supply line, toilet, water heater or roof.
- Shut off the water to that fixture or the whole house if you find an active leak.
- Take photos of what you see.
- Have the area checked with moisture meters to find out how far the water has spread.
A mold inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find wet areas hidden behind walls and under floors, so you know exactly what you are dealing with.
